BassIAB 2009.1 is here...

Paul Warren's picture

Ok, it's here at last. BassIAB 2009.1 is done.

While I was listening to some of the new BiaB RealTracks I came across these guitars that sound just like Mark & David Knopfler of Dire Straits. They sounded so good I just had to throw together a track to jam with. It was so much fun that I thought some of you might enjoy it too.

I decided to do something a little different. I started with a bluesy chord progression and added a fairly typical Dire Straits progression as a change up in the middle. While the change up is subtle it seems to work as far as I can tell. Then I decided to add crowd noise as if it's a live jam. Sort of a fantasy jam.

Imagine Dire Straits appeas at a local club for an unscheduled jam session but John Illsley is sick and can't play. So Mark asks the crowd if anyone can play bass and sit in. So do you go for it? Can you do it justice?

I, for one, would not pass up the chance. Dire Straits are one of my favorite bands and I think I can do a bass line that wouldn't make John Illsley cringe, at least not too much.

So you are all invited to join my fantasy and record a line to DS_Live_Jam and post your results for comments and discussion. Please invite anyone else you might know who would be interested. Let's get some interest in BassIAB going again so we can keep this feature active.

Grab a copy of the chord chart too. The tempo is 135bpm.

WOW

Paul you have outdone yourself with this one. I love the audience applause additions too...can't wait to work on this one. What version of BIAB did you use for this ? Are you using any plugins or just the BIAB right out of the box? I have been thinking of getting it but wondered if the great stuff you get is just it alone or ar you embellishing the track other wise.

Hi Greg. I'm glad you like

Hi Greg. I'm glad you like it. I just had to do this one when I heard those guitars. They're perfect. It just screams out for an simple, understated yet melodic bassline.

Now to your BiaB question. The short answer is yes, it is done completely with BiaB right out of the box. I have version 2009 with the latest patch #279.

To elaborate a bit, BiaB 2007 first introduced RealDrums in addition to the original midi capability. RealDrums are recordings of real drummers playing a particular style. BiaB chops the recordings into multi bar phrases and assembles them to fit your chord chart. There is some time stretching going on in the background to match the tempo to your song. RealDrums really enhanced the overall midi music experience by increasing the realism of the output.

BiaB 2008 introduced RealTracks whish are similar to RealDrums in that they are recordings of real artists playing. Unlike RealDrums though RealTracks have to be pitch shifted as well as time shifted. Not only that but the various phrases have to make sense musically. PGMusic don't make the technology public as to how this is done (understandably).

BiaB 2009 introduced some improvements to the RealDrums and RealTracks but didn't introduce any new technology.

It's important to note that, unlike midi, you can't tell the RealDrums or RealTracks what exact notes to play. That's predetermined by the recording. So RealDrums/Tracks can't cover popular songs like midi can but as you can hear from the BassIAB tracks BiaB can do a fantastic job of creating an original backing track.

Finally, you need to get the appropriate RealDrums/Tracks sets to go along with BiaB. If you buy the 2009 pro pack you get a limited set of RealDrums/Tracks. You could buy extras separately but it's far more economical to buy the UltraPak that has all the Drums/Tracks. That's what I have. Believe me if you have a limited set you'll want more so it's best to just buy the UltraPak right away.

I'm looking forward to hearing your bassline to this one. It's always interesting to hear how different players interpert the tune.

A most excellent track,

A most excellent track, Paul. I wish I could get in on this one. I was humming a bass line as I listened. Man, I hate that my computer died!!!!!

The monitor doesn't stay

The monitor doesn't stay (for lack of a better word) "lit". It just goes black. If I use a flashlight, I can see the screen and operate, but it's just too much of a pain to do that. I've done some troubleshooting, but I still don't know if it is a hardware or software issue.

couple suggestions....

do you have another pc you can try the monitor on to determine if it is the monitor or the video card in the pc....if so then i would try hooking the monitor up to another pc.....if it works fine ten the issue is most likely the video card has went bad....if it doesn't work then the monitor has gone bad. i doubt it is any kind of software issue. most likely it is the monitor but could be the video card ( especially if it is an older crt monitor)

Sorry Greg, I forgot to

Sorry Greg, I forgot to specify. It's a lap top. I have thought about picking up a VGA cable and running it off the back of the computer to our new TV (actually the kid's new TV) to find out if it's a video card problem.

New Info

My wife spoke with one of her customers and described the problem to him. He told her it sounds like the backlight is out; about a $200 repair. Sound legit?

That's what it sounds like

That's what it sounds like to me. I recently had an Acer monitor crap out on me. It was the backlight and the symptoms were identical. Repair costs more than a replacement. The shop where I took it for an estimate said Acer is known to have problems with the backlight burning out.

another idea....

most laptops have a option for a vga out.....you could alwasy get a cable and hook it up to a standard vga monitor also...

I'm glad you like it Bo. It's really too bad about your PC croaking. I'm sure you'd have a great bassline to lay down to this track.

Good News

Hey Paul,

It looks like my line is a go. With the help of a flashlight, can see the screen well enough to navigate Audacity. I recorded it a couple of nights ago. When the the kids are down sleeping Friday night, I'll send it to Wheat for hosting and pin it up here.

Well that's great Bo. I

Well that's great Bo. I always like to listen to your basslines. Talk about dedication though. I've never heard of anyone recording using a flashlight to see the computer screen. LOL

You're a real trooper, man.

You're a real trooper, man. That's dedication!

I used to know a studio owner/producer--quite a good one--who had a monitor so crappy I couldn't stand to look at it. I guess he was just really frugal when it came to gear. He got such amazing sounds, no one cared.

I picture you with shop lights hung all around your studio, aimed at that monitor.

Does it have a functioning monitor out? Maybe you can pick up a cheap monitor from Goodwill or some place like that--just something to get you by until you eventually replace the laptop.

I'll take a look at some garage sales or at Goodwill and find a monitor and get back with you.

Don't know how things are

Don't know how things are where you live, but here in Charleston, there's one Goodwill that specializes in computers. All the computer stuff from the other local collection points gets sent there. The geeks there test it, sort it, and even assemble complete systems and sell them. But they also have lots of monitors and parts on hand.

Hi Wheat. Glad you like the track. It's no problem for me to do these as I really enjoy it and learn a lot from it. It's also great to hear what other people would play. That opens up my creative side as well.

I'm glad you might be able to record a track to this one. I'm looking forward to hearing what you'll do with it.

I'll comment when I actually listen to it. ;)

I will give a listen today though. I grabbed the tune soon as you put it up but since most of my playing right now is a 5min doodle here and there I have not loaded this in the player yet.
