Upgrade Plans

wheat's picture

The lack of a working chat room option has me thinking it's time to start planning on our next major site upgrade. We're on 4.7.10 right now. We started off on some sub-version of 4.6. We need to move to 5.x, at least. Luckily, our current default theme, Amadou, is available for 5.x. Here are all the Drupal themes (you have to have a drupal.org account to filter the list by version).

Drupal 6 is already out, BTW. So, we're behind, as ever. :)

I'll have more details, scheduled downtime, etc., in the next few days.

The guys at Lullabot have a screencast walking through the process of upgrading from 4.7 to 5.x. I used one of their vids the last time I upgraded. So, I trust them. :)

sounds like a plan

i do have a question. would it be a big deal to just go and upgrade to the newest version rather than upgrading but still staying behind ?

Probably not. Evidently,

Probably not. Evidently, starting with version 5.x, upgrading is a lot easier. So, while you have to upgrade to each major version (i.e. can't skip from 4.x to 6.x). It might be a good idea to consider bumping up to 5.x and then directly to 6.x as part of the same process.

Food for thought. Good idea, Greg. I'll check to see if the themes and third-party modules we use have been ported to 6.x yet. If they have, there's really no reason not to bump up two versions instead of one.

I think an upgrade would be

I think an upgrade would be great if it results in a working chat room. I think that's one feature that would really set this forum apart from the others.

There's actually an IRC

There's actually an IRC integration plugin for 4.7. :) But I didn't think anyone would be interested in it. I used to use Unix Talk (anyone remember that one?) These days, I use Google Talk, AIM, and MSM, but mostly Google Talk.
