I just bought a Boss-me50b multi-effects pedal. I went with this option (rather than individual stomps) so that i can get an idea for what effects i like/are available and it obviously a little cheaper than buying a bunch of stomp boxes. So far its been really fun messing with all the sounds.
So for the past couple of days I have been tweaking various knobs and finding different sounds. I've found that there are a a lot of places to adjust the way an effect sounds. For example different effects can be used in conjunction, each tweaked individually to achieve a different sound, then compressor/limiter can be applied and tweaked, to further change the sound, then the master can be adjusted to give a different sound! My point is that there are a bunch of permutations of sound options with this device (which is great!).
So now my question is, what sweet effects do you know for the boss-me50 (i.e. all the various knob settings and effects chosen) , that you are willing to part with? Or is that a really strange question to ask? I know I will find my own sounds, through fiddling but its just cool to know what other sounds people are achieving with this device.
thanks

Hi Rob. I have two stomp
Hi Rob. I have two stomp boxes, the Chunk Sytems Agent 00Funk envelope filter and the Brown Dog gated distortion. In addition I have a multi fx built into my mixer. I can't help you with the exact settings on the Boss unit but I can give you some ideas what I like and you can try them with the Boss unit.
The first thing I really like is a low pass filter set around 4000Hz. This gives a really 'old school' classic rock sound a la John Paul Jones or Mitch Mitchell. It eliminated finger noise too. : )
The second thing I really like is some chorus or flanger with or without the low-pass filter. It fills in the overall sound.
Another effect I like to use occasionally is some distortion. I set it quite high so it's more fuzz than distortion. This gives me a sound similar to some of Larry Grahams work (to bad it won't give me some of his talent). I don't use this with the low-pass filter very often since the filter removes most of the fuzz anyway.
Finally, I like some auto-wah for really funky tunes. I try to use the auto-wah (envelope filter) sparingly; just enough to give some 'edge'.
Hope this helps a bit. Some of the other regular members have used the Boss unit and may be able to help more. BTW, welcome to the BP forums.
low pass
Cool, thanks for the input. I'm guessing low pass filter on the me-50b is "bottom boost", so i'll mess with it some more. I've been fiddling quite a bit with chorus but haven't used flanger much. Auto wah edge is also pretty foreign to me, but i guess the more funk I play the more I'll be using it. Thanks again for the advice. Rob
I think you are right

I think you are right. At the very least the overall sound will be much the same.
I bought an ME-50B last
I bought an ME-50B last year, great little board.
I find, as do most players that have used mine, that the one effect they all like to play with is the "defreter" on the fist pedal, either dry by it's self or add a bit of chourus or reverb. The defreter gives a great tone for classic rock/blues.
I tend to play a lot of Deep Purple as well and adding just a touch of the "metal" distortion to the defreter gives it a good tone for that Deep Purple/Black Sabbath feeling.
If you want something really raunchy, the presets 7 patch 2 (second pedal) or 8 patch 2, give a great sound for some hardcore tunes.
If you like reggae then check out the octave up. Play with the settings a bit and it gives you a bass/metal drum combination that works great for that style of music.
The "kick drum" is a great to use as well to help keep time when practicing.
Enjoy.

Defretting
Hey Hazz, the defretter is pretty cool. Will check it out now with that metal distortion.
I've been using the kickdrum for practicing. I was hopping to be able to tap different beats, but straight is the only way (unless I'm missing something?). Is it at all viable to use that kick drum for any time other than practice? I guess it depends on the sound/feel you're going for?
Do you use the limiter/compressor much?
I've been playing on a pretty cheap practice amp. Are the effects going to sound different when playing through better amp?
Thanks
rob
One thing, I mentioned that
One thing, I mentioned that bank 8 patch 2 is somewhat grungy, my bad, I forgot that I tweaked it a bit and added some overdrive to it.
The Kick drum will only do the one tempo you put in and wont do any variations of the beat. It will however crank out the beats as fast or slow as you want. As for other times, I have never tried, I guess it would depend on if it might throw off the drummer and/or guitarist.
I used the limiter when I first used the board and it was set to "natural" but I do not recall the knob positions as I left it where the previous owner had it set.
I have not tried it through a "cheep" practice amp but I would guess it most definitely would have a different tone through better speakers as do most instruments. Cleaner, crisper and better tone, all which will allow you to hear the variations of effects much better.
The only effect I see no reason to use would be the "synth square", unless you are doing some seriously weird stuff because it does not sound like anything musical and has zero sustain. Maybe I missed something but that is what I have found.

Oh yeah, the kick drum, be careful of where the volume is set at, if you have the volume to high and bang out some beats with the kicker it will blow the speaker if it is a low end speaker, it gets some good thump going.
