Paul: they sucked so bad, I turned them off (globally) though they still work on profile pages. I'll have to tweak the layout before they'll work with the default theme. I'll keep this thread for testing.
If people want to go ahead and upload an avatar, they can. It will only show up on your profile page for the moment (example. But it will show up on posts and maybe comments eventually--once I fix some layout issues. And it will help with testing.
Just go to "my account" in the left nav and then click the "edit" tab on your profile. Scroll down to "Picture" and click the "Browse..." button. Current size limits are 85x85 (pixels) and no bigger than 30KB (though you can get them down to just a few kilobytes if you optimize them). I'm not sure what formats it will take--probably JPEG, GIF, and PNG.
