How many strings should a bass have, anyway?

4

A bass has 4 strings. A guiyar wannabe has 5, and a harp has 6 or more. However, I have been eyeballing a used 6 for fun.

Actually, if it has five

Actually, if it has five strings, isn't it more of bass than a four since it goes LOWER?!?! Haha!

LOL

My Yamaha 1004 is a 35 scale 4 banger. I'm just teasing about 5 strings... I had one for a while and it was a lot of fun. However, I was worried about playing it live so when an opportunity presented itself to sell it, I did.

My wife asked me to wear headphones when I played the 5. :)

Fortunately my wife likes my playing. Unfortunately her ears can not take the frequencies of the low end. Turn the bass up slightly and I can drive her loony with dizziness and headaches. If I crank the guitars up it does not bother her at all.

Kinda funny 'cause some of the bands she likes to see live have a strong bass (bluesy jazz kinda riffs) and even if the volume is not too loud she still needs ear plugs and need to sit towards the back. Either way, she gave me the ok to tear out the walls of one the rooms in the house and completely soundproof it so I will be enlarging it as well by about 90sqft.

Well, it already is our "studio" but I have yet to do any acoustical treatment or soundproofing. I am waiting until I enlarge the room before doing all that. Plus I have a certain budget and with some of the connection I have I am going to do the work my self (with some help from a neighbor) to save some money there and spend the rest on gear. ;^D

I am shooting for mid summer to start. One thing that will be nice is I will be able to play while the kids are sleeping (naps and at night) and I will use a baby monitor so I can listen in on them.

I thought they were a bit older, like 4 and 6 or something but I sometimes check the internet when I first wake up, also I make comments and then I have a look later and I'm shocked by what I say. not always a good idea as I take a long time to wake up.

I voted four because I'm still learning what the other two are for! I would have voted for two if it were up there. ; )

Re: How many strings should a bass have, anyway?

I voted 5, cause that´s what I mainly use and like it better than 4. 6 has too wide fretboard for my hands and I have no need to go any higher anyway.

I like your thinking Paul.

I like your thinking Paul.

go the 5

I use 4's for the fast stuff and I'm not so good on a 6er but I think a 5 is a good all round bass for stage work. I've not used a 4 on stage fo a whole gig in 3 years.

Youz tryin' to start a fight??!!

I voted for 5. I like 4 and perhaps will be giving 6 a shot but with so many tunes these days in drop D and the fact I also do a lot of songs with standard tunning it makes it that much easier. No need to have more then one bass (well, there is a need but just not for that reason) and I do not have to keep retuning between songs.

I voted "4" because that's

I voted "4" because that's what I play, but I secretly lust a fiver (maybe one of those Lakland's), but I've decided a six doesn't work for me. The string spacing is either too tight or, if it's not, the necks end up being too wide.

In an idea world (read: one in which I have lots of money), I'd have two fivers, in addition to my beloved fours. One would be strung BEADG and the other would be EADGC since I like both the high and the low range, but rarely on the same tune. And I really am not a fan of drop-D.
