Experimenting with new ad placements

wheat's picture

I hate sites that are eaten up with advertising, so I've tried to keep ads to a minimum and tucked away in corners. But I'm experimenting with some different ad placements, which I've told will perform better. So you'll see some banners under the titles of articles and forum posts (but not each individual comment). You'll notice that I've removed the ad blocks that used to be in the right-hand menu.

I hope these don't annoy anyone. I'm going to try them for a few weeks and see if they do better at these locations than they did at the previous ones.

Annoy? Naw, not at all. Just extreamly disturbing and bothersome. ;^P

The only area it seems to be to much is on the home page. Having an advert under the titles makes it look to busy. If you need to place them where they are seen easily then what about downsizing them a bit and have them go across the top of the page just under the sites name?

Another option, what if you use a three collom look and have the adverts down the right side? I am only tslking about the home page though. The adds in the forum do not seem to be so bad.

I'll have to experiment a bit. What I'd like to do is have just one on the home page (between the title and the body of the top story, but only the top story). I didn't really intend to have any in the forums at all. And I can write some code to eliminate those. I'm not sure how to trick it into putting an ad only on the first story on the homepage, but I'll figure it out.

See if these new ones suit you better. I took the ads away from the individual posts and instead placed one between the breadcrumb navigation and the first item on the page. There's still one in the footer, as before. And I brought back the one in the left-menu. So it's still three per page (as it has always been). But I think they're less obtrusive this way.

I have no issue with the new ad placement. Your ads are as tasteful and unobtrusive as ads can be and still function as ads.

What I hate is popup ads. Especially the ones that are placed so the close button is off screen or the ones the launch pages with more popups ad infinitum. Grrrrrrr. I also dislike excessive use of Java in ads because it forces window redraw operations that cause flicker. None of this applies to your site Wheat and for that I'm grateful.

Popup Ads must Die

I hereby pledge that we shall never have pop-up, pop-under, or any other kind of ad that tries to create a new window. Even though Firefox eats 98% of the popups out there, I still hate sites that use them.

Glad the ads don't offend. I'm working to integrate them and keep it as tasteful as possible. That always takes work. One of the things I dislike about some other bass sites I could name is the preponderance of ads.
