BASSIST REGGIE WASHINGTON HOSTS EXCLUSIVE ICMP MASTERCLASS
On Saturday the 14th of November, the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) was delighted to send their bass degree students to see the incredible Reggie Washington perform at Charlie Wright’s Bar, as part of the International London Jazz Festival. Students were excited to be given the unique experience of seeing one of Reggie’s projects, ‘Music Of The Phrase’, featuring the formidable line-up of Patrick Dorcean on drums, Jeff Lee Johnson on guitar, and DJ Grazzhoppa on the decks, prior to his bass masterclass on November 16th at the ICMP, Kilburn.
Reggie and his band took the audience on a tour de force of all things groovy, drawing on elements of jazz, R&B, funk, soul, reggae, fusion, hip hop, and classical, while weaving them seamlessly together into a diverse set. While the incorporation of a DJ is a usual choice for a performance at a jazz festival, Reggie admits he has wanted for some time to incorporate a DJ into an otherwise more “standard” arrangement.
After the gig, students had the chance to meet Reggie to speak about his performance and discuss topics for his upcoming masterclass at the ICMP. Reggie has over 20 years experience of performing and touring with artists such as, Steve Jordan, Kenny Garrett, Pino Palladino and D’Angelo. During the masterclass Reggie was more than happy to share his thoughts on bass, groove and music in general, leaving students feeling influenced and inspired.
