BassIAB 2009.2 - B Dylan Acoustic Jam

Ok, BassIAB 2009.2 is here. I wanted this to sound a bit like a Bob Dylan tune and I think it does. I used a chord progression very similar to something BD would have played. To make it more authentic there's two acoustic guitars, one strumming and the other finger picking.

I tried to add some harmonica but none of the harmonica tracks really suited the tune. I tried a fiddle instead and I think it works well. It really has the sort of sad sound you'd expect from some of BDs work. And man can that fiddle player play, really sweet.

So I hope you all like it and want to develop a good bass line for it. As always I'm looking forward to hearing your work.

BTW, it's in G and the tempo is 125bpm. I'll try to put up a chord chart later if this new interface lets me.

Starting to feel compentent

Starting to feel compentent enough on the bass to maybe try one of these at some point. Have to see if I can figure out how to record though.

I finally recorded a couple

I finally recorded a couple of basslines to this tune. One is rather uninspiring although it does work. The second I rather like. I found a rhythm that is a little different and gives it a bit of edge. The only trouble was a couple of missed frets during the take.

I'm going to practice it a few times and see if I can get a good take. Then a bit of EQ and I should have a resonably good bass track. Hopefully I'll post a mix in a few days or so.

Anyone else getting close?

i got tied up.....

in a bathroom remodel over my vacation....i swear i am gonna do one soon.....i really like this tune and want to give a good test to my martin acoustic bass.

What! You let something as

What! You let something as unimportant as a bathroom remodel get in the way of playing. lol

Just kidding of course. Hopefully you'll get some time soon.

So how are you guys getting

So how are you guys getting on with this tune?

I'm kind of struggling with it. I have a bass line that works but it's somewhat uninspiring. I need to find a good and interesting rhythm to make the notes come alive.

I pulled out all my old Bob Dylan CDs and played along with a few songs searching for that magic line but no luck. I can't complain though as I'm a real BD fan.

i have

set down and jammed with it a couple times but i haven't had time to record anything yet....hopefully next week when i am on vacation......

Hey Greg, how's it

Hey Greg, how's it going?

I'm glad you've been able to jam with the song a couple of times. Did you come up with a bass line easily? As I mentioned I'm finding it a bit harder than I expected. I don't play along with folk music much so I haven't really had the experience. I'm sure it'll come though. I think this is pushing my abilities which is one reason I really like the BassIAB feature.

when jamming to a new song.....

i alwasy just kind of hit the roots a few times thru til i get a good feel for the chord changes....so far i just kind of rooted thru it and tried a couple licks here and there....

i too like the fact the BassIAB pushes me too. i have some friends i sit in and jam with on occasion and they alwasy seem to throw a new song at me....sometimes even one i have never heard before.....and usually in front of a paying live audience....but like i said i love the challenge.

Yeah that's how I do it too. It gives me a feel for the rhythm at the same time.

The second step for me is to try some typical lines for the genre. Root-5 for country, a walk for blues etc. Often I'll have a working line quickly from this step.

In this case I studied the lines in actual Dylan tunes. There's a lot of Root-5-root-3-5 stuff that works ok for this tune too. But because the tempo is a bit slower than typical it's been hard to get a good rhythm going. Slow quarter notes work but get boring quickly. Stacatto eighths work too but also get boring quickly. I'm trying to find a nice mix that'll add interest.

NICE TUNE......

kind of sounds like i shall be released every now and then ......

Well the chord progression

Well the chord progression came from that song, at least in part. I needed something that BD would have played. I tried many different thing but this was the one that clicked.

it works

i like it....besides that is one of my favorite Dylan songs....

I REALLY have to get to a store and buy some speakers! I'm getting a little tired of the sound of silence!

Bose make an excellent set

Bose make an excellent set of PC speakers for $89 CAN. They're the best overall value I've found.

Dave Magaro's picture

I used to get Bose speakers

I used to get Bose speakers for jukeboxes when buying Touchtunes which is a jukebox designed by Bose. I've had mixed results with them. Their 201 speakers sounded great! They really were a nice sounding little speaker. But, then their 301 sounded horrible! It seemed like Bose couldn't make a good sounding big speaker. The 301's where much bigger and looking at them you would have thought they would blow away the 201's. But, the 201's dusted them for quality. It wasn't even close.

I have a SoundDock that I like quite a bit. And I've really wanted to get some of their computer speakers, but I think I'll hold out for some near-field monitors (some KRK's, maybe. Any thoughts on those?).

Maybe you're right. Maybe the Bose folks are really good at small speakers--that's their meat-and-potatoes, after all.

I never heard the KrK's, so

I never heard the KrK's, so if you get a pair let me know what you think. I have a set of Alesis. I have an Alesis amp as well. The amp is GREAT! The speakers aren't bad but I think there were probably better choices. But, I'm used to them now. Hell the first mix I did with them was mudfest....LOL! I took a mix home and it was all low end. I popped in the CD and said "Well that doesn't sound very good"! But, once I got used to them I know how thin to make it. Before I got those I was actually mixing with a pair of Ifinity home speakers. Belive it or not those speakers sounded AMAZING! They were so easy to mix with. My guitarist had a spare amp which saved me from having to pull one out of one of my racks. But, it was a 1,200 watt QSC. It all worked out fine until one night I made a mistake, overdove a channel and got a high pitch feeback going. Smoke litteral rolled out of the speakers....LOL! I never saw that before! I looked at my guitarist and said "You didn't have that amp cranked did you"? But, I alreay knew the answer....LOL! Those voice coils died a horrible death! Needless to say that was the end of that session!

: )
