Best starter bass for Mini-Wheat?

wheat's picture

So, I've decided I ought to buy a bass for Haden, just to have it around for him to bang on. Mine are both long scale (34"). Most short-scale basses are around 30" scale length. Any ideas about something even shorter/more manageable?

Some I'm considering:

1) Fernandes Nomad Bass (25 1/2" scale)

2) Traveler Guitar Escape MK-II Bass

3) D'Armond Ashbory bass (18" scale)

4) A short-scale Danelectro of some sort

3) A Squier Bronco bass (30")

In A Bit Of A Hurry Wheat?

LMAO! The kid can't even say "Groupie" yet and you want to get him a bass....LOL! You think you might be rushing it Wheat?...LOL! That Bronco Bass looks almost Identical to my very first bass which was a Fender Music Master. That was the only short scale bass I probably ever played in my life. That Ashbory bass looks pretty wild. If it were me I would probably go with the Squire.

The Squier is also the least

The Squier is also the least expensive option ($149). It also gets points for durability (being a Fender). So he can't really break it. And, if he did, who cares? Just buy another one.

I wish they made a fretted version of the Ashbory. Or, better yet, a fretted version of the Ashbory with a built-in amp! Hey, Bo, build me one of those! But I suspect those weird Ashbory strings don't work with frets. I suspect frets would eat them up.

Yeah, for his first one I'm thinking it should be a fretted bass. I got my girl a squire guitar, and I have to tell you for the price you can't beat it. I thought about getting one myself.

Yeah, my Tele Custom is a Squire, and it stacks up very nicely to the official Fender version, yet it was only $200. It suits my needs quite nicely.

I just wish Fender/Squire made a super-short-scale bass (i.e. something less than 30").

Hell Wheat at his age it's like buying a pair of pants that are to big. He will grow into it....hehehehe!

Yeah, that's true. Hell, I

Yeah, that's true. Hell, I could start him on the ukulele and migrate him over to the bass when he's big enough to hold it. But I definitely want to have one around for him to bang on.

(I got my start by banging on the low strings of my dad's archtop acoustic.)

I was a late bloomer. I didn't buy my first bass until I was sixteen. I thought I was too old to really be able to do anything with it at that point.

On to the dicussion, The fella I bought my used starter bass from was very high on the Samick line. From what I understand, they used to be the korean builder for one of the major lines.

I was 20 when I picked up bass. :P.

Get him the Bronco. They're not too bad for the money.

I think you ought to get him

I think you ought to get him a nice Sadowsky. I'll hold it for you until he's...oh...50! Haha!

My REAL answer to your question would be the Ashbory. It's got a toy-like vibe, but he can still make noise with it.

Yeah, and the sound surprisingly good (upright-ish). Weird little contraptions.

I think the Ashbory might be the best idea. While it's not a toy it has that toy like quality that'll get him interested earlier.

I thought about buying the

I thought about buying the kids their own basses but held off and just let them used the beater. Also, even though they see me playing and have been since the day they were born, they still tend to show interest in other instruments so I got a used key board, a set of drums and cheep Sampson mic for them so they can make their own mind up which they want to learn if not all of them.

Since you were trying to sell the Carvin just let him bang on theta for a while. ;P

Just sold an Ashbory

Had I known you were considering an Ashbory, I would have made you a deal. I recently bought one, played with it for a week or so, and sold it on eBay. It's a fun bass. The mini-Wheat would have loved it.

Samick

For a starter bass for my daughter, I bought her a new Samick Corsair on ebay for $139.00 - I believe the Samick Corsair comes in both a short-scale and a regular scale length - so make sure if you are interested when you order. It is has both P-bass pickups in the neck and Jazz style in the bridge. Although it arrived with a horrible set up and action, the quality exceeded my expectations. The funny thing is the sound of the bass is surprisingly good - very articulate. I would put the quality (other than the set up) better than a Squier.....Samick is sort of a merchant builder of Korean made instruments, but a very good value for a starter bass....it's been 2 years since I bought it and I can't recall the ebay vendor but I still see them from time to time - it has the newer Greg Bennett inpsired smaller headstock.

found this one.....
