Have tried many.

I have tried many, many acoustic bass guitars but not a single one of them impressed me much (unplugged). They never make the bodies big enough to resonate lower notes properly. It seems that you need to use a plectrum to get loud enough with these acoustic basses, and I hate using a pick.

I own a bizarre hand-made acoustic bass guitar with a neck made out of an old church pew, but it is only really ever used for festivals where I can't bring an amp, and I don't have room for my double bass.

This one sounds awesome , but it's plugged in.

Fat man, fat bass.

I've heard good things about

I've heard good things about the Earthwood basses, like Brian Richie of the Violent Femmes played. They aren't in production any more, but they had really big bodies, which is essential:

Here's an interview with Richie, with a pic of his bass.

I've though, disappointed as I've always been with the volume of acoustic bass guitars, that it might be worth it to learn how to play the guitarron.

When you observe that even a doghouse can't compete with a small ensemble and so needs to be plugged in, the quest for a "loud enough" acoustic bass guitar looks rather futile.

I've got a deep bodied archtop AGB about the size of a cello, huge neck, high action, etc. AAMOF, it lives in a cello case and barely fits. While it sounds great unplugged it's certainly not loud. Fortunately it sounds nearly the same amped as unplugged, so it's a keeper.

Not only does it have the warmest tone of any acoustic, but it rings the loudest that I have heard unplugged. I am desiring one myself.

This big man has an axe to grind....er bass axe, but axe none the less.

You know . . . You could

You know . . . You could always get a guitarrón, just in case there is a chance you (or someone else) do not know what that is, it is the 6 string acoustic bass used in Mariachi bands.
