It's that time again. BassIAB 2007.3 is on. By nearly unanimous request we're doing a little 'boogie woogie' number called 'Water Street Boogie' submitted by Hazz. I think it will be a lot of fun.
The Idea
For any of you who are new to the BassIAB feature here at BP, the 'Water Street Boogie' tune is recorded without a bass line. You should download it to your PC and compose a bass line of your own. When you are satisfied with your bass line you should record it, mix it with the original and output the result as an mp3.
You can either upload the song to a web location and post it via a link or you can e-mail Hazz or me and we can upload your song and provide you with a link to post. If you need any technical help either e-mail us or ask questions in this forum.
BassIAB is not a contest. It is designed to give us all a chance to hear how different bassists of varying skill levels compose and play a bass line to the same song. It is also good practice to try different styles. I hope you all enjoy the feature.
Remember, BassIAB is open to all BP members. If you haven't participated before please feel free to join in.

It's a 12-bar blues in C. Chords are C, F, and G.
The tempo is 135 right on the money. The metronome in Live syncs right up with it (hmmm, what possibilities does this raise?).

That is surprising. Usually
That is surprising. Usually an mp3 will be off just a hair. Instead of being 135 it would be 135.478 or some weird time like that. Glad it synced up.
Oh, and thanks for posting the key, I forgot. ;)

Yeah, I wonder if those little timing beeps at the beginning helped it out. I'm not sure. It was nice though.

That onlinedrumtracks.com
That onlinedrumtracks.com service is very interesting. I might look into doing that for some of the James, Not Jim stuff (down the line, of course). My programmed lines are very minimalistic. I'm sure a real drummer could do something better.

I've played along with WSB a couple of times now. Cool song. I'm thinking about just jamming to the tune rather than really composing a bass line. Maybe I'll record it in one pass, mistakes and all. It's such a great tune to jam to.
One thing that's bothering me is what to do about the ending. Should the bass be playing along with the keys? I don't know yet. Maybe I should just record whatever happens.
Have any of you tried playing WSB yet? What do you think about the ending?
Re: I've played along with WSB a
. . . I'm thinking about just jamming to the tune rather than really composing a bass line. . .
That was the original intention of the tune. Just as if you were sitting around with some friends jamming and playing what ya wanted weather it fit perfectly or not.

What ever feels right. I tend to play all the way through.

I'm tempted to do the same
I'm tempted to do the same thing: maybe record three passes of the whole thing and pick the best. Maybe slice and dice a bit, maybe not. I'm not sure what I'll do on the ending either. I'll have to give that some more thought. Fun tune to jam on, though.

I would say whenever you are ready. I was thinking of trying to record this weekend. Assuming I was able to get something usable I'd be thinking of posting sometime next week. But of course there's no rush either.
